The Clinical Experience

Gain meaningful clinical exposure while learning to think like a physician.

The Women's Health Leadership Initiative provides an immersive two-week clinical experience designed to help aspiring physicians develop clinical insight, professionalism, and a deeper understanding of women's healthcare. Students observe real patient care while engaging in conversations about clinical reasoning, leadership, communication, and health equity.

What You’ll Experience

  • Outpatient clinic

    Observe patient evaluations, counseling, preventive care, and office procedures while learning how physicians build relationships and make clinical decisions.

  • Gynecologic Surgery

    Experience gynecologic surgery firsthand while gaining insight into surgical anatomy, operative planning, teamwork, and decision-making in the operating room.

  • Labor and Delivery

    Observe the care of pregnant patients through labor, delivery, postpartum care, and obstetrical emergencies while learning how interdisciplinary teams work together.

  • Ultrasound

    Learn how ultrasound findings are integrated with patient history and physical examination to guide diagnosis and treatment.

  • Physician Mentorship

    Participate in one-on-one conversations about medicine, career planning, professionalism, leadership, residency, and life as a physician.

  • Leadership and Health Equity

    Explore healthcare disparities, maternal health outcomes, patient advocacy, and the physician's role in advancing equitable care.

More Than Shadowing

WHLI is designed to be more than observation. Students are encouraged to actively engage with the clinical experience by asking thoughtful questions, practicing clinical thinking, reflecting on what they learn, and developing habits that will serve them throughout medical school and beyond.
