How long is the program?
The Women's Health Leadership Initiative Clinical Experience is a two-week observational program.
Who is eligible to apply?
WHLI is open to junior and senior undergraduate students, recent college graduates preparing to apply to medical school within the next one to two years, and incoming medical students. Applicants should be committed to pursuing a career as a physician (MD or DO).
Do I have to be pursuing Obstetrics & Gynecology?
Not at all. While the program is rooted in women's health, it is designed for future physicians pursuing any specialty. Women's health serves as the foundation through which participants explore clinical medicine, leadership, advocacy, and health equity.
Will I be involved in patient care?
No. WHLI is an observational experience. Participants do not provide direct patient care but gain meaningful insight into clinical decision-making, patient communication, surgical procedures, and the day-to-day responsibilities of a physician.
Is there a cost to participate?
There is no tuition to participate in the WHLI Clinical Experience.
Is housing and/or transportation provided?
Participants are responsible for their own housing and transportation. On occasion, housing and/or transportation sponsorships may be available through generous community partners; however, these opportunities are limited and are not guaranteed.
How many students are accepted?
To ensure a personalized and immersive learning experience, WHLI accepts only one student per clinical session.
Will I receive a letter of recommendation?
Participants who demonstrate exceptional professionalism, initiative, intellectual curiosity, and engagement throughout the program may be considered for a personalized letter of recommendation. Letters are not guaranteed and are reserved for students whose performance reflects the values and expectations of WHLI.
What should I wear?
Participants should wear business casual attire or solid black or gray scrubs during clinic experiences.
For operating room and labor & delivery experiences, hospital-issued scrubs will be provided. Additional instructions regarding attire, identification, and professional appearance will be shared prior to the start of the program.
